Very interesting. I didn't realise democracy was so recent in South Korea.

Something that remains a mystery to many of us here in the west is the terrible youth suicide rate, particularly among the female population (worst in the OECD).

While there seems to be a very high expectation of South Korean youth to achieve, and employment opportunities have become increasingly scarce even for the highly educated, I wonder whether there is an even deeper cultural or sociological reason for this widely inculcated misery.

There is so much that South Korea has got right in the modern era, but if there is an intransigent disconnect with the nation's youth, and it remains unresolved, that surely must have social, economic and political ramifications for the future.
