The protests in Iran have been unrelenting. There is no letting up the public rage and the regime is unable to contain it. Could it be for real this time? We’ve asked ourselves in the last four years if each wave of protests is the one. This time it does feel different. They’re louder, turning out in bigger numbers and have no fear of the regime. The protesters are incredibly brave in defying regime brutality, so much that this is a genuine uprising.
This weekend, Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has met with MEPs from the national conservative ECR group. Two outstanding MEPs in Charlie Weimers (Sweden Democrats) and Bob Roos (JA21) have tweeted about their meetings with Reza Pahlavi, who is Iran’s rightful constitutional head of state. Both MEPs addressed him as His Royal Highness.
These two have demonstrated an integrity and commitment to truth and freedom which shames many of their peers in Europe and America. They have recognised the popularity of the Pahlavis and the choice of a constitutional monarchy for Iran. They have not followed the path of Mike Pompeo and Mike Pence, who have accepted money to support the MEK cult. They shame the politicians, diplomats and lobbyists who have fallen for either the MEK or ethnic separatists who have no influence in this process.
Charlie Weimers has been a consistent supporter of the Iranian people and a supporter of Armenia, Ukraine and Taiwan. He is one of the outstanding leaders of freedom advocacy in Europe today. We hope his peers not only in SD but also ECR can attain the same standards. These politicians understand the value and meaning of freedom. They are not going to use the cause of the Iranian people to advance their own ideological ends.
There is no time to waste. All possible support must be given, but it is in the hands of the Iranian people.
